A House Divided…

I have had a few weeks to rethink this miracle called life and I realized that while some things change many other things are fundamentally the same.

This weekend was rich in discussions on diversity, compassion, understanding and recognition of human rights.  Yes, the talking heads on our national networks and cable syndicated shows talked, reasoned amongst themselves about what was and is yet wrong with the government and those elected officials who run the show, but not necessarily the way the electorate voted for.

This brings me to some things being different and others being the same.

Hatred of difference is still the same.  The vile and hurtful comments from those in high place regarding our President can be considered on a new level of mean.  President Obama is often referred to as the other… other what?  This man ran for the office of President in 2008 and won the election, this is a fact.  It is also a “fact” President Obama is the child of a “white” mother and an African man.  In my mind that makes him, President Obama, what most American Blacks are; mixed heritage but his blackness is what the issues are all about.

Our government focuses on the differences of its citizens as a daily practice.  Have you ever really read the applications required to be filled out always address ethnicity.  What’s your race and yes they through in age and sex.  Again, differences are the focus; in my opinion that is what’s wrong with our world.  The emphasis on difference.

June 16, 1858 Abraham Lincoln addressed the Republican Illinois Convention after accepting their nomination for candidate of President with his “A House Divided” speech where he spoke to  the dangers of division.

If we could first know where we are and whither we are tending, we could better judge what to do and how to do it. We are now far into the fifth year since a policy was initiated with the avowed object and confident promise of putting an end to slavery agitation. Under the operation of that policy, that agitation has not only not ceased but has constantly augmented. In my opinion, it will not cease until a crisis shall have been reached and passed. “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”  Abraham Lincoln, “House Divided” Speech

Our Lord Jesus Christ spoke of the same thing: A House Divided (Mark 3:20-27Luke 11:14-23)

I bring these two powerful points up because as a nation, these United States are yet divided and the powers that are in control and the news media they have paid for continued to play to division.

I would like people to  learn of each other as children do without preconceived notions based on lies,, speculation and hatred.  These United States have been built on the backs of others.  Those with the least have built this nation, those with the least keep this nation but the one percent those that control the wealth want to dictate to those of less financial means (and therefore less influence) and keep the division marching on.

Wake up America, those born of this nation of immigrants, slaves and those native to this land originally.  Let’s look at what we have in common.  Let’s see that we all bleed red, we all breathe the same air, drink the same water and put on our pants or pantyhose the same way, one leg at a time.

The differences we see are fabricated to keep us divided.  We are a “Republic” our pledge of Allegiance says:

I Pledge Allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America
and to the Republic
for which it stands,
one Nation under God,
with liberty and justice for all

Let’s keep this in mind as we strive prayerfully to understand our oneness. We can not afford to be a nation divided we must learn to love each other.

We owe it to ourselves to treat each other with respect, kindness, love and not hate because of our differences, let us embrace those differences and embrace the awesomeness of what we all have in common, we are human and unique, created in the likeness of God.

Have a blessed day.
